What’s In a Name?
The Story Behind Tamlyn Translations
Tamlyn Translations is based on an old Celtic myth where a woman, often referred to as Janet, falls in love with a man named Tam Lin. But there’s a catch. Tam Lin is held captive by a fairy queen who repeatedly changes his form into new and dangerous creatures in order to prevent Janet from rescuing him. In the end though, Janet succeeded in holding onto and freeing Tam Lin, because while the outer nature of her true love changed, Janet knew that Tam Lin was still the same on the inside.
What does this celtic myth have to do with language? As a professional translator of Japanese and German into English, I understand that words might have many surface forms but the meaning behind them never changes. It is my job to hold on to that meaning and bring it into English exactly as it was intended in the original language.
